Mr. Togar Oktavianus (29 years old) or commonly called Mr. Togar is an alumni of batch 2 coffee barista training organized by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun / The Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with Pertamina Training and Consulting Company (PTC). This program is one of the flagship programs in the field of community empowerment which aims to empower the community and form new businesses through providing training.
Mr. Togar is a young Medanese man who was born in Jakarta. He graduated from the High School of Tourism (SMIP) at Bina Darma DKI in the year of 2010. Mr. Togar is the second of three children. He currently lives with his mother, sister, and his brother’s family. His mother is a single parent. His parents had separated since he was in 6th grade of elementry school. They live with sufficient finances to survive. In the last four years, his mother has been selling gado-gado and pecel through GoFood. For Mr. Togar and his siblings’ tuition fees they are got support from his mother side family.
Impacted by the Covid-19 Pandemic
Prior to the training, In the year of 2020 Mr. Togar worked as a barista at the CGV cinema. Mr. Togar works to help his mother. This is the reason why he keeps continue to working. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, public facilities such as cinemas were closed to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Mr. Togar was also impacted, he was laid off (PHK).
After a while, public facilities slowly reopened and Mr. Togar worked at bubble tea at Mall Taman Anggrek. However, after three months, the mall was closed again due to the Community Activities Restrictions Enforcement (PPKM) at that time and finally he did not work in there anymore.
Mr. Togar first received information about YIIM and PTC training from his aunt. His aunt knew that he at that time was interested in baristas, such as mixing various types of drinks. When his aunt found out about the training, she offered Mr. Togar to join at YIIM and PTC barista training. His aunt hopes that by participating in this training, he can increase his knowledge about baristas. He immediately registered himself because he did not want to waste the opportunity.
After participating in YIIM and PTC training, there are many benefits. Mr. Togar feels that he has gained a lot of new knowledge such as coffee-making techniques, coffee-making tools and so on.
Developing a New Business for the Needs of Life
After attending the training, Mr. Togar have the opportunity to got business assistance provided by YIIM and PTC. This opportunity is very valuable for him to open a business. Mr. Togar started seriously to develop his business. Starting from finding a place to rent, designing a place, designing a business logo, to deciding a menu.
There are various obstacles faced by Mr. Togar on setting up his coffee shop. One of them is not expecting that some furniture such as chairs, tables, and so on will have to wait a long time. He thought that if he bought a table he could immediately use it or get it. But in reality, he had to wait up to 7 days or more. In addition, it is difficult to find a work partner. Finally Mr. Togar decided to run himself. He also had difficulty finding additional capital, but in the end he won the trust of his mother and his mother’s family by supporting in contribute to increase the initial capital to open a coffee shop, plus savings from himself.
After a long time setting up for his business, finally his coffee shop is ready and has been opened with the name “Four Leaf Coffee” in January 2022. His coffee shop sells various menus ranging from coffee drinks, yakult drinks, mojitos, and premium drinks. The selling price starts from IDR 8,000 to IDR 18,000. The coffee shop opens from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The location of the shop can be considered strategic, because it is located around the office and around the boarding house and he also rents a place for IDR. 35,000,000 for a year. He sells drinks using glasses and also plastic injection cups for take-away drinks. For his shop materials, Mr. Togar buys online.
The shop’s income is increasing slowly. Three months after opening, Mr. Togar’s coffee shop generates a turnover of IDR 3,000,000/month. He does marketing through Instagram social media and puts up a menu board in front of the shop. Mr. Togar also registered his coffee shop on GoFood and Grabfood.
This business really helps Mr. Togar to help his mother. He hopes that in the future his business will be consistent and be famed. He also wants to study marketing to develop his coffee shop business.
