Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun or known as The Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with Pertamina Training and Consulting Company (PTC) established a community empowerment program, namely entrepreneurship training for the welfare of the community’s economy. This training is in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 1 regarding on eradicating poverty and number 10 regarding on ending inequality.
Susiliawati Muryani Berlian (43 years old) or known as Mrs. Susi is one of the alumni of the entrepreneurship training program in cooking frozen food batch 2 organized by YIIM and PTC in the year of 2021. Mrs. Susi is one of the inmates at the Correctional Center (BAPAS) Class 1 Central Jakarta. Currently, Mrs. Susi lives in the Gunung Sari area of Central Jakarta with her husband, four children, mother, and sister.
Life in Prison
While in detention, Mrs. Susi supported herself by doing many things. To meet the needs in the detention center, Mrs. Susi made additional business since she needed funds by the reason of all the prices in the detention center were quite expensive. Mrs. Susi also has to work in the detention center, one of which is washing clothes for fellow inmates. Various kinds of payments given by her friends for washing clothes according to the amount of laundry and laundry soap used. Mrs. Susi did not want to burden her family who are out there to give her pocket money while in detention.
“I’m already in trouble, i don’t want to ask for more money from family outside.”
After 22 months in the detention center, Mrs. Susi finally got out of the detention center in the year of 2021. With this experience, Mrs. Susi has learned various life lessons. She doesn’t want to go back to his dark days and wants to change her life for the better.
“After I left, I felt that I should value money as well as time. After leaving, you can feel how hard it is to earn money like IDR. 100,000.”
Starting from training then providing a business
After being released from the prison, Mrs. Susi was not sure about what to do in her life. Luckily, Mrs. Susi received information from the Community Counselor (PK) BAPAS that a frozen food entrepreneurship training will be held by YIIM and PTC. Mrs. Susi was very interested in participating this training because she wanted to learn new things. After registering, Mrs. Susi was finally chosen to take part in the frozen food training. Mrs. Susi really felt the benefits of the training. This training can help Mrs. Susi improve her skills and add new knowledge.
After attending the training, Mrs. Susi started her business to sell ice-milk jelly. Mrs. Susi sells it under the name “Es Susu Jely Nenek Gunung”. Every day, Mrs. Susi does marketing with some of her friends through word of mouth and through Whatsapp. Mrs. Susi’s sales system is to only accept orders. Ice milk jelly is installed at a price of IDR. 8,000 per bottle. This ice milk jelly business has also been carried out by Mrs. Susi for 4-5 months and is assisted by her sister and child. So far, many of the orders received by Mrs. Susi have come from the Depok area.
Mrs. Susi is very grateful for the business she has made so far. This business can be one of the main sources of income for her and her husband because it is enough to daily needs. She does not want to rely on her children to meet the daily needs of the family.
In addition to jelly milk ice, Mrs. Susi also sells various nuts and cakes such as Nastar. The price of Thai nuts beans starts from IDR. 40,000 to IDR. 75,000 with various packages. Then Mrs. Susi also sells a variety of small snacks with the name “Snack Kaki Gunung” and gabin fla milk cake. The snacks are installed with prices ranging from IDR. 2,000 to IDR. 3,000. Mrs. Susi entrusted her snack sales in 6-7 stalls and also entrusted her sales for 2 days and for BAPAS she entrusted them every 5 days.
During the sale, Mrs. Susi encountered several obstacles. Such as consumers late payment of orders, not be able sell online because she doesn’t understand the online sales system. For the sale of ice jelly, Mrs. Susi needs a freezer. However, the condition of the house that has limited electrical power, it is not possible to use the freezer. This does not become an obstacle for Mrs. Susi to continue her business. Mrs. Susi always makes full efforts to improve her business by offering her sales to several people around her.
Expanding Business in BAPAS Canteen
To expand her business, in May 2022 Mrs. Susi had the opportunity to sell in a simple canteen at BAPAS Central Jakarta, namely the “Kantin Kemandirian Klien”. Mrs. Susi is assisted by one of the cooperative’s administrators, Mr. Sadi, to sell at BAPAS, Central Jakarta. While at BAPAS, Mrs. Susi sold a variety of foods ranging from uduk rice, yellow rice, grilled rice, fried foods, donuts, dimsum, rolls, ti pao filled with various flavors, and lupis. besides that, there are various glass drinks such as coca cola, fanta, and various syrups. The price of food and drinks is sold by Mrs. Susi for IDR. 5,000.
Mrs. Susi’s customers while selling in BAPAS were officers, children, and teachers from the nearest school. Mrs. Susi also often gets snack box orders for BAPAS employees and also for other events. The net income earned by Mrs. Susi every day is around IDR. 150,000.
By running this business, Mrs. Susi hopes that in the future she is able to develop her business. Mrs. Susi wants to develop her skills again to add variety to her food business.
