“Even though I’m only graduated from a junior high school, I always want to learn new things in order to expand my business and support my family.”

Above mentioned words stated by Mrs. Tumini Tuban to maintain her spirit to advancing the micro and small business.

Mrs. Tumini Tuban (47) or commonly called Tumini is a mother with 3 children who lives in Bali. Mrs. Tumini is a survivor of the Bali bombings which occurred in 2002.

She suffered physical injuries and material losses after the terrorist bombings in Bali. As a result of the incident, her husband is unable to work due to health problems, thus Mrs. Tumini has to work hard to support family. Mrs. Tumini and her family are sheltered under the Indonesian Victim Protection and Witness Agency (LPSK-RI). Mrs. Tumini and her family have also been in debt with a great nominal due to the boarding house business went bankrupt due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the year of 2021, Mrs. Tumini participated in cooking skills social entrepreneurship training organized by the Yayasan Insppirasi Indonesia Membangun / The Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) and its partners.

This training program is collaboration program between YIIM and LPSK-RI which is also supported by the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to empower the economy of survivors of terrorism crimes and victims of serious human rights violations. Social Entrepreneurship Training is in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. 1 to end poverty in all its forms everywhere and SDGs No. 10 to end inequality, and SDGs No. 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Nation Institutions. This training aims to create entrepreneurs and independent individuals.

Before joining the cooking training, Mrs. Tumini admitted that she could only cook a few types of foods, such as soto, lalapan fried chicken, etc. With all of the limited conditions in her hometown, she did not give up in hoping to change her condition. She got information from her neighbour regarding the cooking training held by YIIM and LPSK-RI, Mrs. Tumini then attended training on cooking frozen food such as cakes, donuts, banana nuggets, risoles, and crispy chicken. Until she finally passed the final selection stage and had the opportunity to train for 5-6 days in Jakarta. In addition, on February in the year of 2022, Mrs. Tumini received cooking tools such as gas stoves, gas cylinders, 2-door refrigerators, and mixers from YIIM.

Through her skills and cooking tools she has acquired, Mrs. Tumini is able to developing her merchandise, which previously only has a meal stall at her home, now she can open a frozen food kios in one of the markets in Bali. She sells a variety of foods that have been taught in YIIM’s cooking and entrepreneurship training. One of the most favorite menu is crispy chicken. At the end of 2021, Mrs. Tumini once received an order for a birthday which are 100 boxes of crispy chicken rice. Even now, Mrs. Tumini’s selling activity is on progress, the stalls in the market and in the yard are always crowded with customers and she often get a catering orders in large amount.

 

Mrs. Tumini’s turnover has continued to increase recently. Every month, Mrs. Tumini earns a net profit of IDR 4,500,000 – IDR 5,000,000 from the frozen food sale, meal stalls, and grocery stalls. This is supported by a wide variety of products through the cooking skills she obtained from YIIM entrepreneurship training. Mrs. Tumini’s customers admit that the taste of her food is even more delicious after Mrs. Tumini has completed cooking training from YIIM. The success of Mrs. Tumini’s business also provides benefits for the school financing of her last child who is in junior high school.

“Alhamdulillah, my business is getting bigger and hopefully it will be enough to pay my son tuition until he can achieve his dream of becoming a police officer.”

According to Mrs. Tumini, the training held by YIIM was very helpful because the knowledge and cooking tools she received had an impact on the development of her business to be developing. Now Mrs. Tumini is grateful to be able to change her family’s economy and has the main income from the business she is doing. She is committed to continuing to advance the business that is being pioneered so that she can open new branches/stores in other places. Finally, she expects that more MSMEs will be created from YIIM’s cooking and entrepreneurship training program with LPSK. Through this program, YIIM is very open to anyone who wants to support social programs, one of which is the community empowerment program.
