On 28th – 29th March 2022 as many as 15 prisoners (Correctional Inmates/WBP) participated in the Entrepreneurship Management Training which took place in the hall of Correction Bureau of Class I Malang (BAPAS kelas 1 Malang), East Java.
Seven prisoners are high risk ex-convicts of terrorism crimes who are undergoing guidance at the Correction Bureau Malang.
This training program is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) numbers 1, 2, 8, 10, 16 and 17 which have been proclaimed by the government as Presidential Regulation Number 59 of 2017 concerning Implementation of the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
In order to strengthen and contribute to the de-radicalization program and empowerment of ex-convicts of terrorism crimes, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun / The Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with Class I Correction Bureau of Malang (Bapas Class I Malang), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), United Nations Security Council Counter – Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), United Nations of Office Counter-Terrorism – UN Counter Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) dan From the People of Japan.
This event was attended by Mr. Sugandi the Chairperson of Class I Correction Bureau of Malang and Mr. Kristian Patrasio as UNODC representative.
The ceremonial event was officially opened by Mr. Sugandi, on the occasion of remarks he stated “This training activity is a form of the Malang Penitentiaries commitment to be able to restore the lives, life, and livelihoods of the prisoners after serving a criminal period. For this reason, we hope that you will be able to truly take part in the training activities, enthusiastically, and be able to apply this entrepreneurial knowledge at the society and in the community,” said Mr. Sugandi to all training participants.
The next speech was delivered by Mr. Kristian, he said “Thank you to the Malang Penitentiary and YIIM in collaboration with UNODC to create reconciliation through soft skills training for ex-convicts and general prisoners. This training is a form of UNODC’s efforts to support prisoners to return to society and be able to meet their needs independently. We also hope that the participants can make good use of this training and we are waiting for the results of this training.”
On the same occasion, Mr. Chrisbiantoro, chairman of YIIM said:
“We are truly grateful to the Malang Penitentiary and UNODC for providing the opportunity to share the benefits with ex-convict of terrorist crimes and ex-convict of ordinary crimes assisted by Malang Penitentiary. In line with the spirit of vision and mission YIIM to share inspiration with people of all backgrounds. Community economic empowerment is one of YIIM’s flagship programs, through entrepreneurial management soft skills, it is expected that you can become the subject of change in the family or community environment. I hope you can take full advantage of this opportunity and don’t hesitate to ask questions to the speaker.”
During the two days of training, the participants were given various lessons concerning on entrepreneurial management.
The materials provided include: 1# materials on how to think and behave as Entrepreneurs, 2# advancing UMKM through Product Innovation, 3# business financial accounting, 4# online and offline marketing, 5# UMKM legality, and 6# Coffee Barista skills.
All of the training participants were very enthusiastic to participating in the training and also actively asked questions.
In addition, the participants were also given the opportunity to work in groups and presented the results of group work as well as various simulation tools provided by the committee, such as financial book report and calculators. One of the participants, Mr. Irvan Suhardianto, an ex-convicts and also the owner of a barbershop, asked to the speaker how to develop a business, and what is the real solution.
In addition, in the legality session, participants were taught how to make a Business Permit Number (NIB), where a NIB is needed to make it easier for participants who have or will have a business to get an assistance for business development and access to financing to financial institutions.
One of the participants, Mr. Bambang, who already owns a chicken farming business, asked whether or not when we have a business branch we need to have more than one NIB. Then answered by the speaker that one NIB is enough.
On the last day of the participants, the participants were given coffee barista skills by Mr. Humam Hasan, one of YIIM’s mentors who is also a former prisoner of the Class I Penitentiary in Central Jakarta. Mr. Humam is also a barista trainer who often provides training for people with underprivileged communities backgrounds, prisoners, survivors and protected by LPSK.
On this occasion, it is hoped that the participants will be able to use the skills to make bottled coffee drinks and non-coffee drinks to develop additional businesses and increase additional income in their place of business.
Eventually before the closing ceremony the participants were also given the opportunity to convey their evaluation and expectations for the implementation of the training. Most of participants said they want to continue to be provided with training and mentoring in order to make their start-up business became stronger and more productive and could be useful for many people.
As a form of contribution to the wider community, especially vulnerable groups. YIIM look forward to cooperate with government institutions or private institutions to provide social impact and spread benefits. This is also to support government programs to reduce poverty and accelerate the goals of the SDGs.
