Nabil Huda Rizalul Haq (20 years) usually called Nabil, is a student of the information systems study program class of 2020. Nabil is one of the recipients of a scholarship given by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun or known as the Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with Insight Investments Management Company (INSIGHT) in the year of 2020. Currently, Nabil is attending college in semester 4th and the Grade Point Average (GPA) in the previous semester reached 3.44.

Nabil was born in Sumenep from a lower middle-class family. He is the first child of two brothers. Since he was 5 years old, Nabil and his younger sibling have lived with their grandparents, meanwhile his parents went to migrate to Jakarta to make a living.

Nabil currently lives in a mountainous area, where most young people originally migrate to make a living. Only elderly residents who are still live in the village. Most of these residents work as farmers.

Strive in Pursuing Higher Education

When Nabil graduated from high school (SMA), his parents were hesitant to allow Nabil to go to college because they could not afford to pay for the tuition. Nabil was determined and convinced his parents to go to college because he has long been determined to go to college. If he doesn’t get a scholarship, he planned to find work to pay for his tuition. As for the separate reasons why Nabil wanted to pursue higher education,

“The main reason I want to go to college is that my education should not be the same as my parents’. Because my father only graduated from elementary school and my mother only went to high school grade 2.”

The first time Nabil received information from a friend that there was a new campus in Sumenep and provided scholarships from Corporate Social Responsibility. After knowing this, finally he tried to enroll in UNIBA majoring in information systems through the regular/test. Nabil also majored in information systems because in the world of work, the field of technology is needed.

After all this time, finally Nabil received information that he was accepted and had the opportunity to get a scholarship. Of the 150 applicants, Nabil was ranked first based on the results of the test scores. His parents were very happy because he was able to study at university with a scholarship.

During college, Nabil commuted quite a long distance every day, which was about 30 km with a duration of 45 minutes. Every day Nabil goes by motorbike.

Active in Various Organizations

During college, Nabil was also active as an administrator for the Student Association (HIMA) Study Program Cadres. When he was an administrator, Nabil participated in various activities such as the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) committee, Chair of the National Calligraphy Competition at the campus Anniversary event, Madura level Design Competition, and various activities he carried out in the HIMA work study program. In participating in various committees, he is also always served as secretary and chairman in the organization. When he was an administrator, Nabil also took part in social activities such as raising funds for victims of the Palu disaster and distributing takjil in the month of Ramadan.

Not only HIMA study program, since 1st semester Nabil has been actively participating in the Multimedia Student Activity Unit (UKM) in the field of head of the Videography division. Apart from that, Nabil has also participated in external organizations such as being a member of the Islamic Student Association (HMI) since 1st semester. Nabil feels that being active in various organizations can increase experience, knowledge, and relationships.

With Nabil being active in various organizations, currently Nabil has participated in the nomination for chairman of the HIMA study program and he was also elected as chairman of the HIMA study program for information systems. For now Nabil is just waiting to be inaugurated.

Work to Meet Life’s Needs

During his studies from 1st semester to 3rd semester Nabil also worked as a freelance photo and video editor, as well as part time in a studio to become a videographer and photographer. The income received by Nabil while working as a videographer and photographer is IDR 100,000/day. For income every month depending on the number of projects.

When he entered 4th semester, Nabil had to resign from working at the studio because he had to take care of his grandparents at home. After resigning until now Nabil only works as a freelance photo and video editor. Income from work he uses for daily needs and for savings.

In carrying out his lectures, Nabil had experienced several obstacles, one of which was not having a laptop. Laptop for Nabil is one of the primary needs in the department, because it is used to learn coding. When he didn’t have a laptop, every time Nabil did his assignments he always went to an internet cafe and sometimes he borrowed a friend’s laptop. After working and saving, in 2nd semester Nabil was able to buy a laptop.

For the future, Nabil still hopes to keep the spirit to be able to learn. He also expressed his hopes for YIIM and Donors:

  “Hopefully YIIM and INSIGHT will be more successful, thus they can help friends who have the desire to go to college but don’t have the funds.”
