Sewing Entrepreneur Training: YIIM and INSIGHT Train Detention Center for Class I Pondok Bambu Inmates Sewing Skill

Foundation of Inspiration for Indonesia Development or known as Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) in cooperation with Insight Investments Management Company (INSIGHT) organized a further social entrepreneurship training with the specification of sewing skills for Muslim women’s clothing. This program is in collaboration with the Class I State Detention Center (Rutan) Pondok Bambu which is located at Jl. Revolutionary Hero No.38, RT.4/RW.3, Pd. Bambu, Kec. Duren Sawit, City of East Jakarta, Special Capital Region of Jakarta.

The training was held on 12th to 16th July and 19th to 23rd July 2023 with 10 participants ranging in age from 27 to 47 years, all of the participants were female inmates, considering the detention center.

This activity is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. 1 regarding on fighting poverty, No. 8 regarding on decent work and economic growth, and No. 17 regarding on partnerships to achieve goals.

Sewing training material is the latest program initiated by YIIM and INSIGHT after considering many factors, one of which is the prospect for this type of business to be run on a micro and small business scale, both individually and in groups. So that the hope is that inmates who participate in this program can become qualified sewing entrepreneur practitioners.

The training starts with lessons on making pattern drawings, techniques for measuring materials and cutting materials as well as getting to know sewing machines and supporting equipment such as thread sizes, needles and scissors techniques to get good cut results.

In his opening remarks on 12th July 2023, Chrisbiantoro as a chairman of the YIIM had conveyed “Sewing entrepreneurship training is suitable for equipping inmates to have additional skills, so that the knowledge gained during the training can be used as provision when serving the remaining prison terms and after they are free with the status of correctional clients to pure free status and return to society.”

Meanwhile, Muhammad Isnaeni Setiawan had delivered his remarks “Insight through the social funding scheme is committed to becoming a partner in empowering penitentiary inmates to be independent and productive. In cooperation with YIIM, we hope that this training will bring benefits to the future of the inmates, especially in Pondok Bambu Detention Center Class I.”

During 10 days, participants gained a lot of knowledge, lessons and experience and also succeeded in sewing several models of robes. Uripah as a trainer during the training had said, “This 10-day training has become a good foundation for the assisted residents, I hope they can still learn this sewing skill so that they can produce better products and in the future be able to open a business. I hope there will be a continuation of this training.”

Uripah has long experience related to sewing business practices with various models and orders. In addition, she also has experience teaching sewing classes, including those held at the Community Learning Activity Center (PKBM) Negeri 16 Rawasari, PKBM 2 Karet, then she also taught sewing at Said Hakim Tanah Abang Vocational High School. Ms. Uripah also has a national certificate for sewing courses and apparel entrepreneurship training. She opened a sewing entrepreneur business with 3 of his employees in Cempaka Putih Timur Village, Cempaka Putih District, Central Jakarta.

The participants also received a training certificate as proof of passing the sewing entrepreneur training. The training committee which YIIM with the Pondok Bambu Class I Detention Center, also carried out pre-tests and post-tests to get candidates and the best results and according to the expected outcomes.

From the implementation of the pre-test, it was found that the candidates had high enthusiasm and motivation in participating in the training, although there were several notes indicating that they did not understand sewing material, this was understandable because this material was being taught for the first time. However, in the post test the participants showed quite good progress and understood well the material being taught by the trainer.

Separately, the Head of Class I Rutan Pondok Bambu, Ms. Dewi Sondari, delivered “This training is also one of the benchmarks for inmates of the detention center to have good behavior or not and are willing to be coached or not so that it can be our consideration in providing relief or other requirements. We hope that this training will bring good benefits, a good portfolio and also good results for the development of more productive prison inmates.

Inspiration Greetings!
