Atiek Andrajati (45 years) or usually called Mrs. Atiek is one of the alumni of the cooking (baking) training held by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun or known as the Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with Insight Investments Management Company (INSIGHT) in the year of 2020. This training is one of the people’s economy empowerment programs and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 1 regarding on eliminating poverty and number 10 on ending inequality.

Mrs. Atiek lives with her husband and one child in a boarding house in the Cempaka Putih area, Central Jakarta. Mrs. Atiek and her family were entrusted to be the managers of the boarding house. The husband’s current occupations are running a laundry, aqua gallon, and gas business. Atiek’s daughter is attending college, which is currently focusing on working on her thesis.

Mrs. Atiek’s activities prior to attending the training were running a basic food stall business, burgers, and also a steamed coconut rice business. Previously, Mrs. Atiek worked at the Sudirman regional office, Central Jakarta. Due to flooding in Jakarta area in the year of 2012, the office was closed and eventually Mrs. Atiek was selling foods from home. She received order such as cake.

Moreover, Mrs. Atiek’s catering business grew under name “Kenken Catering” and accepted orders via telephone and WhatsApp. Many boarding houses order her food most of them for office events. She is assisted by her husband and also her child for this business.

The Beginning of Joining the Training

Mrs. Atiek was invited by one of her neighbours to take part in a cooking training held by YIIM and INSIGHT at Wisma Maros, at the RT 10 Cempaka Putih Post. After attending the training, Mrs. Atiek had the opportunity to get a business aid tool in the form of a steamer pot/cooker (28 cm in size).

“This training is very beneficial, good to attract people who has small businesses so they can develop.” she said.

After attending the training, Mrs. Atiek continued to run her rice boxes and snack boxes businesses. There are various kinds of menus made such as grilled chicken, soup, tempura shrimp, chicken/meat. There are various prices for rice boxes and snack boxes ordered. For rice boxes, the price starts from IDR. 15,000-IDR. 25,000/box and for snack boxes, a minimum of IDR. 5,000/box. Mrs. Atiek determines the price based on the results of discussions with customers.

Apart from rice boxes and snack boxes, Mrs. Atiek also accepts orders for pastries. The cake is priced at IDR 40,000/half a kilo jar. At the time of Eid al-Fitr and Christmas, Mrs. Atiek received orders of up to 6 dozen and these orders were sent out of town using expeditions.

While running the catering business, Mrs. Atiek gets a month’s gross income of around IDR. 4,000,000 – IDR. 5,000,000 and a month’s net income of around IDR. 3,000,000-IDR. 4,000,000

Inviting Neighbours to Collaborate

Due to limited manpower, sometimes she needs additional people to help her business. Like when getting rice orders for the Civil Service Police (Pol PP) for 1,500 boxes for the morning, afternoon and evening. Eventually Mrs. Atiek invited local residents to help cook. The local residents were very happy and enthusiastic when they were invited.

After that, Mrs. Atiek had several times invited local residents to help her business. Mrs. Atiek also sometimes gives orders to other women in the area who also have a catering business.

“Sometimes when I’m tired or have business I pass the order to my neighbor who also has a catering business. I’m happy to share the fortune.” Said Mrs. Atiek.

The hope for the future is that Mrs. Atiek wants to continue running her business and that her business will always run smoothly. In addition, she also expressed her hopes for YIIM and INSIGHT,

“Hopefully YIIM can be even better and hold baking training with a more varied menu.”
