Mufti Ahbal (31) or commonly called Mufti is one of the alumni of the coffee barista social entrepreneurship training in the year 2022 organized by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun or known as The Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). He is one of family member of the victim of the Bali 1 bombing in the year of 2002 which caused both his parents to become victims.
Currently, Mufti lives with his wife and his kid (7 years old). In meeting their daily needs, Mufti and his wife sell fruit at a kiosk near their house and are currently conducting market research to open a coffee shop. Since he was a teenager, Mufti was interested in the coffee and aspired to open his own coffee shop. Until one day, he received information that YIIM with LPSK and UNODC held a coffee barista social entrepreneurship training and immediately registered himself. The coffee barista entrepreneurship training dedicated to victims and families of victims of terrorism, it became the Mufti’s gateway to enter a new world of coffee business, he also wanted to make his parents who died because of the Bali Bombings proud.
Coffee barista social entrepreneurship training consists of several stages, namely online via Zoom Meeting for 3 days. Then, it was continued with offline training in Jakarta for 5 days. Mufti learned a lot about how to make coffee to runs a cafe. Mufti was also given the opportunity to practice being a barista at Kafe Inspirasi for 2 weeks. After the training was completed, Mufti received assistance from YIIM and LPSK in the form of coffee beans, glass syrup, mill, manual brew equipment, and an espresso machine.
The twists and turns of life don’t make him give up
Prior to the barista training, his family economy condition was unstable. Mufti has worked in several companies and opened businesses but ended in failure, either due to eviction or lack of understanding of business management so that income and expenses were not balanced. The business failure experienced by the Mufti did not make him stop and give up. Precisely with these failures, made him wants to keep continue to learn and correct his mistakes. Therefore, he continues to pursue the coffee sector and attend coffee barista training from YIIM thus he can be successful in opens his business again.
Hard Work That Pays Off
After attending entrepreneurship training from YIIM and LPSK, Mufti admitted that he got a lot of knowledge and skills related to coffee and entrepreneurship. With the knowledge, skills, and tools he received, Mufti finally succeeded in realizing his long-standing dream to be able to open his own coffee shop called “Kedai Kopi Mr. M”. The shop has not been officially opened because it is still in the stage of menu fixation and kiosk renovation. However, Mufti has received orders from relatives and local residents while conducting market research to see if the price and taste match the customer’s tastes.
Mufti sells various products, such as Hot & Ice Coffee, Espresso, Americano, Squash, Thai Tea, and many more. In addition, Mufti also made product innovations by selling a new menu called “Arabica Ice Coffee Milk” which is a concoction of arabica, milk, and oranges. This menu is one of the best selling menus in the shop. The coffee beans used for Mufti’s products are bought from the market and then grind themselves and then processed into coffee products.
The coffee shop is located in a kiosk on the highway near his house. The shop is open from 09.00-21.00 WIB. Drink prices at Mr. M coffee shop varies, ranging from IDR. 10,000-IDR. 50,000 depending on the quality of the coffee used. In addition, Mufti also sells ground coffee at a price of IDR. 10,000/15 grams. Every day the Mufti be able to sell around 15 cups with a turnover of IDR 150,000/day. Currently, his coffee products can only be purchased directly at Mr. M coffee shop however in the future Mufti plans to expand the market by registering his store with Go-food, Grab Food, and so on.
Providing Benefits for Others
“Thus the knowledge I get from YIIM can be useful for others, I am always welcome to help people. In addition, I also want to realize YIIM’s dream to always empower the surrounding community.”
He also wants to expand his business, his goals is to sell 100 different menus so that the products he sells are diverse and can expand the market. Mufti hopes that he can help people around who are interested and want to learn how to make coffee and start a business.
