Nurfitri (33 years old) or usually called Fitri is one of the alumni of the 2022 make-up and hairdressing training organized by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun or known as the Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with Insight Investments Management Company (INSIGHT). This program is an embodiment of INSIGHT’s commitment by cooperating with YIIM to transform investments that have a social impact. In addition, this program is also in line with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDGs No. 1 regarding on ending poverty and SDGs No. 2 regarding on ending hunger.
Fitri is a mother with two children, also she is currently six months pregnant with a child. Currently, Fitri and her family live in a house owned by her parents in the Kampung Rambutan area, East Jakarta. Her husband currently works as an Office Boy (OB).
The Beginning of a Career as an Assistant for MUA
For a long time, Fitri has been interested in the makeup field or the profession of makeup artist (MUA). Her first entry into the makeup field was when she joined her aunt in doing makeup in her home area. She saw how to apply makeup to her aunt’s customers one by one. After that, Fitri started trying to do her kid makeup to practice her abilities. Since then, Fitri has started to help her aunt with makeup business by starting with do the bridesmaid makeup. At that time Fitri was still wearing her aunt’s tools and make-up.
Then in the middle of 2021, Fitri came back to took part in doing makeup with Regita (cosmetology training alumnus in the year of 2020). Fitri did makeup to the bridesmaid, the receptionist, and also did makeup to the dance children. Sometimes Fitri is also given a job by Regita and there were also some people who come directly to her house to booking makeup.
“Because I passionate and had willingness to join, so hopefully I am lucky in here. Luckily I only have to go home early in the morning and finish still in the morning time, so there’s still plenty of rest time. Sometimes I’m leaving at 4 am and at 8 am I already home. If there’s a request to help change a wedding dress, then I will come home after the event.”
Willing to be paid un-targeted to add experience
While carrying out this work, Fitri earns an un-targeted income. According to her, the most important thing at this time is experience, because at this time she is still pioneering. The salary she gets is very helpful to meet the needs of her family and she also pays installments to buy her own make-up equipment.
“It’s good to be able to help my husband because his salary is not up to 2 million rupiah. If I get paid, the money is used to pay for tools and makeup one by one. The first income for one person is around IDR. 25,000 – IDR. 30,000. During makeup, people never target the price, the important thing is to have experience.”
While working as a makeup assistant, Fitri is willing to get up at 4 am to start work, and also sometimes works until the evening. This is a valuable experience for her and her husband also supports her working in this field.
Participate in Training to Improve Ability
Because she wanted to practice her skills, Fitri took part in makeup and hairdressing training held by YIIM and INSIGHT. After participating in the training, Fitri is very happy because she can train her ability to make a career as a makeup artist (MUA). Currently, her income has increased to IDR. 350,000/job.
Fitri hopes that after participating in the training, she can develop her skills in makeup and hair. And also she hopes that in the future she has a complete makeup equipment and can open a clothes rental service.
