Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun or known as the Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) in cooperation with Insight Investments Management Company (INSIGHT) help the economy by organizing community empowerment programs, namely social entrepreneurship training for the underprivileged, pre-prosperous and disabled people. This program is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDGs Number 1, regarding on eliminating, number 8, regarding on decent work and economic growth, and Number 10, regarding on ending inequality.

M Akmal Fudzahyani or usually called Akmal (28 years) is one of the alumni of the coffee barista training held byFoundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) supported by Insight Investments Management Company in the year of 2019. Akmal is the first child of three siblings. Currently he lives with his parents and younger brother.

The Beginning of Entering World of Coffee

Prior to participating in coffee barista social entrepreneurship training, Akmal was a former resident of the Central Jakarta Correctional Center (BAPAS). At the end of 2019 after Akmal left the Penitentiary (LAPAS), Akmal was invited by one of the Community Advisors (PK) to take part in one of the training programs, namely coffee barista social entrepreneurship training held by YIIM and INSIGHT.

During the training, Akmal was quite active and enthusiastic until finally Akmal was selected to do an internship at YIIM’s Inspirasi Coffee Shop. Akmal ran an internship program in early 2020 with an internship duration of three to four months. During his apprenticeship, Akmal was very diligent in learning about coffee. Previously, Akmal was not very interested in coffee.

“I’m happy to be able to take part in an internship at Kopi Inspiration. I didn’t like coffee before. I never thought that I would enter the world of coffee starting with joining YIIM training.”

From Internship to Permanent Work

After doing an internship at Inspiration Coffee, Akmal was directed to do an internship at another cafe. In the end Akmal chose to do an internship at the Pulo Pulo cafe in the Kalibata area, South Jakarta. Starting as an apprentice, Akmal finally worked at the Pulo Pulo cafe until now. Akmal’s monthly income is around IDR 4,300,000. Akmal is very grateful because starting with training, now he is back in a job and can help his parents.

Even though Akmal already works at a coffee shop, he is still learning about coffee through YouTube videos and also consulting with a mentor when Akmal attended coffee barista training at YIIM. Akmal is always persistent in learning to develop his knowledge and skills in the coffee field.

It is hoped that in the future Akmal will continue to develop his skills and is eager to open his own coffee business. He also hopes that he will continue to work consistently as a coffee barista.

Akmal also expressed his hopes for YIIM and INSIGHT,

“Hopefully YIIM and INSIGHT will continue to progress, helping the lower classes a lot to develop skills and help the community’s economy to be better in the future.”
