At that time, he was sentenced to four years and two months in prison. Mr. Sutrisno was detained at the Lowokwaru and Sentul Correctional Institutions (LAPAS). Then served as a Correctional Client at BAPAS Class 1 Malang.
The Beginning of Running a Business
After three months of being free, in 2018 Mr. Sutrisno decided to start a business, namely agro-tourism with the name “Rumah Ketahanan Pangan”. Mr. Sutrisno’s business is located in Gabong Village, Malang Regency. He used his parents’ sugar cane land which is 6000 meters to run the business. Initially the land was leased to someone. However, it has become increasingly unprofitable for Mr. Sutrisno and his family because the rent price is decreasing every year.
In the end, Mr. Sutrisno slowly converted the land for seed business, agriculture, animal husbandry, and now it is a children’s playground. This playground is called “Taman Polan”. For visitors who come have to pay an entrance ticket of IDR 10,000 by getting media tools for planting.
Mr. Sutrisno’s first income in this business was IDR 7,500,000/month for gross turnover. As his business grows, Mr. Sutrisno currently earns a gross income of IDR 8,000,000 and a net income of IDR 5,000,000 each month. The income received by Mr. Sutrisno is also used to develop his current business.
During the process of changing the land, Mr. Sutrisno experienced several problems in planting cassava and tequila. Even though he failed, Mr. Sutrisno did not give up to continue growing various kinds of plants for this agricultural business. He considers this to be a lesson for the future.
Since he was in prison, Mr. Sutrisno has planned what activities he will do after he is released from prison. One of the plans that will be carried out when leaving is a business in the agricultural sector. Since before he entered detention, he has enjoyed running a business. Mr. Sutrisno also had basic agricultural knowledge when he was in college, but stopped in semester 4. This agricultural science was continued to be developed by Mr. Sutrisno while he was in prison until now
“When I was inside, I already conceptualized what I would like to get out later. Thank God it’s going smoothly now because from the inside I’ve thought about it. Even though the reality is still wrong, this can be used as a lesson.”
The Good Impact of Entrepreneurship Management Training on Sutrisno’s Business
After attending the entrepreneurship management training, Mr. Sutrisno feels that this training adds knowledge to his business development, especially regarding digital marketing, one of which is through social media and e-commerce. According to him, digital marketing is very helpful to expand his business market. So far, Pak Sutrisno’s business has only sold agricultural and livestock products to traditional markets with face-to-face (offline) marketing.
“Yesterday’s training was very important for us, especially for the e-commerce marketing and design strategy section. The plan for the future is to develop the business by selling livestock products such as frozen meet with e-commerce so that our sales will not only be here, we can go out of town.”
As for the playground, Mr. Sutrisno has only done word-of-mouth marketing. However, now Mr. Sutrisno is starting to market his place of business through social media such as Tiktok and Instagram.
“I started marketing through sharing with Kindergarten (TK) teachers. Kindergarten needs knowledge about agriculture. So when they practice about animals and the environment, I invite them to educate. In accordance with my mission, this is done because of concerns about agriculture, which is currently not of interest to the younger generation.”
To expand his business, Mr. Sutrisno was assisted by Mr. Wildan, who is a former NAPITER for online marketing and also catalog photos. Currently still in the marketing preparation stage. Mr. Sutrisno plans to sell the results of his business outside the city and also abroad. At present Mr. Sutrisno’s business also has a Business License Number (NIB) and SKU (Business Certificate) at the sub-district level.
Not only online marketing, Mr. Sutrisno’s plan is to also advertise his place of business at the NKRI shop located at the Malang station using television (TV). This is so that train passengers can see the advertisement and be interested in coming to Mr. Sutrisno’s place of business.
