HUMAM HASAN : Former Correctional Inmates Persistent becomes a Barista Trainer and Recipient of Undergraduate Scholarships

Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun / The Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) is in accordance with its vision, which is to become an institution that inspires the community in realizing the values of caring and partisanship and continues to spread benefits to others.

YIIM in cooperation with the Insight Investments Management Company (INSIGHT) through a corporate social responsibility fund (CSR) scheme collaborates to help the community related to social and humanitarian issues such as poverty and disaster issues. This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs Number 1 to eradicate poverty and SDGs Number 10 to end inequality.

Mr. Humam Hasan (42) or usually called Humam, prior joined the YIIM barista training program, was a former Correctional Inmates (WBP) from the Class 1 Correctional Center of The Minister of Law and Human Rights (Bapas) Central Jakarta. In the year of 2018, Humam enrolled the barista training and began from basic barista training and internship as professional barista. He followed all stages of the process tirelessly and with high discipline. The dark past of being entangled in drug abuse cases did not make Humam to despair otherwise he turns into a better person.

His high enthusiasm for coffee has led Humam to be trusted as a mentor for coffee barista training and internship as professional barista as well as social activities carried out by YIIM and its partners such as Victims and Witnesses Protection Agency (LPSK) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). He is also trusted and recognized as a barista trainer train survivors of criminal acts of terrorism and victims of gross violation of human rights violations.

In addition, Humam is also trusted to be a barista trainer for the empowerment program for underprivileged an disabled communities in collaboration with the Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program from Pertamina Training and Consulting Company (PTC). He is also often invited by the Central Jakarta BAPAS as a resource to share inspirational stories for clients who have just finished their sentence.

Humam provides training and also assistance to the alumni of barista training program, starting from the introduction of coffee-making techniques, introduction of raw materials to coffee-making tools. Having a high social spirit towards others and as a form of contribution from the benefits of getting coffee barista training from YIIM in cooperation with INSIGHT, Humam has persistence to spread inspiration through coffee skills training. In addition to providing training, Humam also participates in monitoring and assisting alumni who have opened coffee shops. The alumni who start a coffee shop businesses consist of former inmates, people with disabilities, survivors and victims under protection of the LPSK, alumni of  coffee training in cooperation with the Pertamina Training and Consulting Company, and underprivileged communities who experienced work termination.

In order to change his future and his persistence to study, he was selected for a scholarship and currently registered as a 3rd semester student of the Faculty of Economics, University of Bung Karno (UBK). Having a high social spirit and as a form of Humam’s contribution as an alumni of YIIM and INSIGHT entrepreneurship training, he also provides barista training to share benefits and knowledge about barista knowledge to UBK university students. The barista training is to broaden the interest of the community, especially the students, to pursue the barista profession.

Humam works at the Kopi Inspirasi every Monday to Saturday. The long journey is not an obstacle for Humam to work and develop coffee skills. While working as a head barista at Kopi Inspirasi, Humam also supports YIIM and assist to communicate with the alumni of barista training through the Whatsapp group and also visits to the coffee shop bussinesses of the alumni of Barista training who have started a coffee shop business. In addition, Humam is also persistent in studying pursuing education as a student and working on exam questions given by the lecturer. With the activities carried out, Humam has the last score with a Cumulative Achievement Index is  3.55.

As the breadwinner of his family, Humam is currently able to support his family’s livelihood, previously he did not have a job and now he is able to support his family’s economy. He is also an inspirational cadre who is currently contributing to society and helping many people who have the same fate as him.

YIIM is also available and open to any cooperation and donations from all parties and communities to empower the underprivileged and disadvantaged communities. YIIM commits to continue the empowerment program and to assist them to be independent entrepreneurs.
