Developing New Entrepreneurs Through Barista Training and Internships for Survivors of Crimes of Terrorism

As a concrete form in an effort to realize the value of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 1, 2, 8, 10, 16 and 17, it is necessary for the government and all stakeholders to cooperate.

As has been done by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun / the Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (LPSK RI) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) through barista and frozen food entrepreneurship training on 9- 11 December 2021 at the LPSK Office. Barista and frozen food entrepreneurship training as a form of psychosocial effort to provide strengthening, recovery, and empowerment for survivors and being protected from acts of terrorism by the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK).

Since 2018, YIIM, supported by social fund of the Limited Liability Company (PT) Insight Investments Management, has conducted various entrepreneurship trainings and one of its main programs is barista training. The barista training program conducted by YIIM and INSIGHT has resulted in alumni who have either become entrepreneurs independently or have worked in coffee shops. The alumni of the barista training have started a coffee shop businesses and some of them also become baristas in variosu cafe shops. Thus this outcome has resulted economic development and welfare impact for the alumni.

In addition to being a barista, several alumni of YIIM and INSIGHT barista training have become training mentors who have the capacity and capability to train and assist coffee barista training participants in each generation and new batch of the training. The barista alumni have been trusted and choosen by the State institutions such as LPSK and international institutions such as UNODC to train people from various background such as poor people and below middle class who are economically vulnerable and also people who are socially disadvantaged for instance former prisoners and victims of serious crimes.

In this regard, barista training held by YIIM, LPSK, and UNODC for survivors who incidentally are victims and their families of victims of terrorism.

The spirit of the training is part of the social re-integration effort, namely returning survivors to the social environment and under this program they were empowered with entrepreneurial skills and knowledge so that they are able to start new Micro small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM).

On Friday, January 21, 2022, a barista internship has started for three selected participants from various regions in Indonesia. The barista internship will be conducted for two weeks starting from January 21, 2022 to February 3, 2022 at Kopi Inspirasi. The opening ceremony of the internship was attended by the Deputy Chairperson of the RI LPSK, Mrs. Susilaningtias, S.H., M.H.

The event was opened directly with remarks by Mrs. Susilaningtias saying “Congratulations to the selected participants who have passed to take part in the barista internship in Jakarta today. Hopefully all of you can take advantage of the barista internship opportunity to the best of your ability until it’s finished and don’t hesitate to ask the mentors. This barista training and internship is a form of support from LPSK with YIIM and UNODC for survivors of victims of terrorism. Hopefully this training will be useful for you to be able to become an independent entrepreneur so that you can help your family at home.”

During the internship, the intern will be mentored and assisted by alumni of barista training who are beneficiaries of program of YIIM and INSIGHT.

The alumni who became mentors were Mr. Humam Hasan, a former client of the Central Jakarta Penitentiary and Ms. Fransisca Natalia P.S., a former street food sellers and alumni of barista training who have two coffee shops and one of the successfull alumni of the previous training.

Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun / the Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development (YIIM) with the support of partners and will continue to be committed to building the nation through community empowerment to achieve family economic independence through the program of social entrepreneurship.

This is in line with the SDGs goals that have been proclaimed by the government into Presidential Regulation Number 59 of 2017 concerning the Implementation of Achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
