The Foundation of Inspiration for Indonesia Development or known as Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) in cooperation with Insight Investments Management Company were holding social entrepreneurship training on steam washing skills for the first time in 2022. This training is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 1 regarding on eradicating poverty and number 10 regarding on ending inequality.

One of the beneficiaries is Dapik (53 years old) who is an alumni of the vehicle steam washing training held by YIIM with Insight Investments Management Company in the year of 2022.

Mr. Dapik is a former inmates of the Class 1 correctional center (BAPAS) in Central Jakarta. He has four children, of which three currently have families and one child lives independently. Now Pak Dapik lives alone with his wife in the Kemayoran area, Jakarta. Before serving time in prison, Pak Dapik worked in the cleaning service since the 2000s.

Starting a Business After Being Free from Detention House

Mr. Dapik served six years in prison because he was caught in a case. After getting parole in 2022, Mr. Dapik is required to report for one year.

After Mr. Dapik was released, he had no income at all and in the end he ventured to open a food business such as instant noodles, fried rice and coffee at the BAPAS canteen. While running the food business, Pak Dapik only received a net income of around IDR. 80,000. From this income, Pak Dapik is very grateful because the results of his business can be used for daily meals.

Trying New Opportunities from Joining Training

While Mr. Dapik was carrying out the mandatory report, Mr. Dapik was invited by one of the BAPAS community advisors (PK) to take part in the training held at BAPAS, and he chose to take part in the vehicle steam washing training held by YIIM and INSIGHT.

“The reason I chose steam washing is because it’s easy. We can try to open our own steam at home or anywhere else.” Mr. Dapik said.

Eventually, Mr. Dapik registered himself and took part in the batch 1 vehicle steam washing training. During the training, Mr. Dapik was very focused on listening to the theory and practice of washing vehicles using a steam tool.

  “The first time I was a bit confused because I had never washed using a machine. Just use a hose. After participating in the training, the results were abundant, I got the knowledge.” Mr. Dapik said.

Starting to Open a Vehicle Steam Washing Business

After the training, BAPAS Central Jakarta received assistance from the steam vehicle business provided by YIIM and INSIGHT. With the help of this tool, Mr. Dapik started his business under the name “C&K (Community and Client)” in November 2022.

The business run by Mr. Dapik coincides with his food business. He runs his business every Monday to Friday from 7 am to 4 pm. For the price of his services, small motorbikes are IDR 15.00 and motorbikes with 150cc and above cost IDR 20,000 to IDR 25,000. The location of Mr Dapik’s steam washing business is in front of the BAPAS canteen for Central Jakarta.

Every day he washes 5-6 motorbikes. If it’s busy it can reach 10-12 motorbikes. His net income for steam washing vehicles every day is around IDR. 100,000 and he once achieved a daily net income of IDR. 200,000.

Mr. Dapik is grateful that there is an increase in income now. Previously, Mr. Dapik only relied on income from the food business for his daily life, now Pak Dapik’s income has increased through the steam washing business of vehicles.

The hope is that in the future, Mr. Dapik wants his business to be even busier and be able to open a branch for his steam washing business. Pak Dapik also expressed his gratitude to YIIM and INSIGHT.
