YIIM and INSIGHT IM Support Community Empowerment through Perfume Entrepreneurship Training for Underprivileged Communities

Jakarta, May 27, 2025 – The Foundation of Inspiration for Indonesia Development or known as Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), in collaboration with Insight Investments Management, conducted an empowerment program aimed at economically and socially vulnerable groups through a Perfume Entrepreneurship Training Program held on May 27, 2025.

The training was attended by 15 participants, including individuals with disabilities (two with physical disabilities and one with visual impairment), housewives, freelancers, and unemployed individuals who have yet to secure employment. Participants were selected through a registration and administrative process, followed by an assessment of their social functioning, with particular emphasis on economic aspects.

The training session was facilitated by Susgiharti as the main trainer, accompanied by assistant trainer Dewi Susilowati. Both are entrepreneurs in the perfume industry since 2000. The lead trainer owns a perfume business named Aneka Parfum, which currently operates 12 store branches across the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek).

The perfume entrepreneurship training was officially opened by a representative of the Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) management board, represented by Maria Dewi Yanti as the Board Secretary. In her remarks, she stated,

“YIIM has been established for 10 years, and one of our flagship programs is social entrepreneurship training, which includes various skills — one of which is perfume-making. Insight Investments Management, as YIIM’s strategic partner, continues to bring a positive impact to the community by enhancing their economic functioning through social entrepreneurship programs. We hope that participants make the most of this training by gaining knowledge and experience, and eventually applying them as independent entrepreneurs. Ultimately, the outcome of this training is expected to contribute to their families’ welfare.”

The event continued with remarks from M. Isnaeni Setiawan, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Coordinator, who stated,

“Insight Investments Management is an investment and mutual fund distribution company that also provides opportunities for investors to invest while giving back to society through our CSR programs. Together with YIIM, Insight IM remains committed to organizing CSR activities that have a tangible impact on empowering communities, one of which is this perfume training. Based on the success of the 2024 perfume training, which significantly improved participants’ economic conditions, we are hopeful that the 2025 session will bring even greater economic benefits.”

On the day of the training, 80% of participants arrived before the scheduled start time, demonstrating a high level of enthusiasm and commitment. The training began with a pre-test to assess participants’ initial knowledge about perfume. Following that, the participants were introduced to the basics of perfume-making and the tools used in the process. Once the general overview was completed, participants were invited to identify various scents from different perfume concentrates to enhance their olfactory sensitivity — a fundamental skill for anyone planning to start a perfume business. After developing the ability to identify fragrance bases, participants proceeded with hands-on practice in mixing three types of perfumes: Eau De Parfum (EDP), Eau De Toilette (EDT), and Eau De Cologne (EDC). This practical session aimed to build their perfume formulation skills and develop the ability to identify the fragrance notes in their blends.

Participants were also provided with knowledge on perfume business management and were given the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with both the trainer and assistant trainer regarding various aspects of the perfume business. Throughout the event, participants were highly interactive and demonstrated a strong eagerness to deepen their understanding of the perfume industry.

The training resumed with another practical session in which participants were encouraged to create their own perfume blends using fragrance bases of their choice, allowing them to express their creativity. Upon completion of the blending process, participants were asked to present their creations and conduct a random sniff test to further refine their olfactory skills. They were also encouraged to explain the characteristics of the perfumes they had created.

The event concluded with the awarding of certificates of completion to all participants.

This program is also aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • Goal 1: No Poverty
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities

The inclusion of participants from the disability community in this social entrepreneurship perfume training reflects these goals in action. The initiative embodies the shared commitment of YIIM and Insight IM to channel social funds in a way that generates meaningful socioeconomic impact — regardless of age, gender, disability, ethnicity, origin, religion, economic capacity, or social status.
