Ageng Patmoko (50 years) or usually called Mr. Ageng is one of the barber training alumni organized by the Foundation of Inspiration for Indonesia Development or known as Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) in cooperation with Insight Investments Management Company (PT INSIGHT) in the year of 2018. This program is one of the community’s economic empowerment programs that aims to improve the economy of underprivileged communities. This program is in line with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDGs number 1 regarding on ending poverty and number 2 regarding on ending hunger.
Mr. Ageng currently lives with his wife and three daughters in the North Petukangan area, South Jakarta. His current occupation is barber business, he is a breadwinner for the family because his wife is focused on taking care of the household.
Finding New Opportunities by Participating in Training
Since 2016, Mr. Ageng has been “dismissed” by his former office, at a well-known taxi company in Jakarta. After being unemployed, he had to rack his brains to find a fortune. He has experienced all kinds of ups and downs, from selling around to opening an ice cream shop in Ciledug CBD. His wife also helped with selling medicine in collaboration with her brother.
Until finally in the year of 2018 he attended barbershop entrepreneurship training and coaching or barbering held by YIIM and INSIGHT. By attending this training, Mr. Ageng hopes to gain new skills and be able to open a business to support his family.
“Initially I got the information from a friend in the office during work. When he gave me information on shaving training, I finally tried to join him.” He conveyed.
From Apprentice to Dare to Open a Business
After participating in the training, Mr. Ageng took part in an internship program held by YIIM at the YIIM barbershop that had been provided by YIIM for barber mentors to undergo an internship program. In that place, Mr. Ageng practices his shaving skills so that his shaving results were even better.
After 2 years of Mr. Ageng participating in the internship program, Mr. Ageng had the opportunity to get capital assistance in the form of a set of shaving tools that the trainees could use to open their own business. After receiving this assistance, Mr. Ageng opened a business under the name “Optima 73 Barbershop” in the Larangan District area, Tangerang City.
In his business, Mr. Ageng offers a variety of services, from shaving mustache, shaving hair to coloring hair at a price of IDR 5,000 to IDR 50,000. Now he gets an average of 7-8 customers every day. And now his net income in a month averages IDR 2,000,000.
“Alhamdulillah, after almost 3 years of opening my own business, the income I get per day is enough to meet the daily needs of my family.” Said Mr. Ageng.
Mr Ageng feels very grateful that the knowledge and capital assistance given by YIIM and INSIGHT can improve his family’s economy. He hopes the business he runs continues to run so he can meet the needs of his family. And also Mr. Ageng really felt helped because of the YIIM and INSIGHT inspirational scholarship programs, his eldest son was able to carry out his college education at the Jakarta Veterans National Development University.
