Coffee Barista and Culinary Business Equipment Assistance: Encouraging the Spirit of Social Entrepreneurship for Survivors of the Terrorism Crimes

JAKARTA – Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun / the Foundation for Inspiration of Indonesia Development  (YIIM) has once again contributed to realizing the spirit of social entrepreneurship for the Indonesian people. This time, YIIM in collaboration with the Witnesses and Victims Protection Agency of Republic of Indonesia (LPSK-RI) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) provided business equipment assistance for survivors of terrorism crimes on February 18, 2022.

The provision of this assistance is a form of concern for YIIM, LPSK, and UNODC for survivors to be able to start businesses after previously being part of the social entrepreneurship training program for barista skills and cooking Frozen food as training participants. Previously, YIIM also held an internship program for selected barista participants for 2 weeks from January 21 to February 3, 2022.

This business equipment assistance was given to six selected survivors who previously attended social entrepreneurship training and were considered serious about starting and developing their businesses based on the search and selection conducted by YIIM, LPSK, and UNODC.

The six survivors protected by LPSK consist of three baristas, namely Mrs. Vivi Normasari from Purwakata, West Java Province,  Mrs. Ni Wayan Ani from Bali, and Mr. Mufti Ahbal from Sidoarjo, East Java Province, where they received business equipment for selling activity and start their own coffee shops.

Meanwhile, three participants who cooked “Frozen Food” namely Mr. I Ketut Suartana, Mrs. Tumini Tuban, and Mrs. Ni Kadek Ardani where they came from Bali received assistance with cooking business equipment to sell various frozen food specialties, either in the form of a home-based business or a food stall business or snacks such as crispy fried chicken, frozen sosis solo , fried banana nuggets, etc.

The handover ceremony was held at the residence of one of the survivors in Denpasar City, Bali. The event was attended by representative of YIIM Mr. Humam Hasan, Chairperson of LPSK-RI, Mr.  Hasto Atmojo Suroyo, and the UNODC Country Manager, Mr.  Collie F. Brown.

On this occasion, Mr. Hasto as the chairperson of LPSK RI expressed his tribute and appreciation to YIIM and UNODC who were successful in organizing this social entrepreneurship program for LPSK survivors and supporting LPSK’s steps in fulfilling rehabilitation and psychosocial victims.

Mr. Hasto said, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to YIIM and UNODC for their cooperation in social entrepreneurship programs for our sheltered citizens from training, internships, to business equipment assistance. Many of the sufferings experienced by these victims have made their social and economic life worse. So, they need the spirit of economic independence in order to be able to carry out social activities properly by improving the quality of life so that we cannot run this rehabilitation and psychosocial program alone and need support from those who have concerns.”

In the event, UNODC Country Manager Mr. Collie F. Brown in his speech expressed his gratitude to YIIM and LPSK-RI for a series of social entrepreneurship programs that went well enough to advance the survivors assisted by LPSK. Collie Brown said, “We are pleased with our collaboration with YIIM and LPSK-RI in this social entrepreneurship program. We hope that the spirit of LPSK survivors and protected residents to become independent entrepreneurs will continue to exist with business equipment assistance for protected residents and this will be an inspiration for other communities.”

Representative of YIIM, Mr. Humam Hasan also said, “On behalf of YIIM, I also thank LPSK and UNODC for their cooperation in this program. This business equipment assistance can at least be a hope and a new beginning for the survivors to start their own entrepreneurship.”

In the event, two representatives of LPSK assisted survivors were present to receive the business equipment assistance provided. Mrs. Tumini Tuban (from the participants who cooked Frozen Food) said “I am happy with the assistance of this business equipment so that my food business can run more smoothly in the future, thank you YIIM, LPSK, and UNODC.” Then Mrs. Ni Wayan Ani (from the barista participants) also said “thank you LPSK, YIIM, and UNODC for the assistance of this business equipment. I will use this assistance as best I can for my coffee business.”

This business equipment assistance is part of the social entrepreneurship spirit run by YIIM which has been running since 2018. YIIM together with partners and donors such as PT. Insight Investments Management supports and runs this program since it is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 1, 2, 8, 10, and 17 which has been proclaimed by the government as Presidential Regulation Number 59 of 2017 concerning Implementation of Achievements Sustainable Development Goals.
